What are the Precautions for Upgrading Audi Original SUV 17-inch Wheels to 19-inch? | JWHEEL

Audi's original SUV comes standard with 17-inch wheels. What are the precautions for upgrading to 19-inch? First of all, we must be clear that wheel modification cannot be discussed without tires. If you want to upgrade from a 17-inch wheel to a 19-inch wheel, the tires you need to adapt to increase the diameter and width of the wheel must be different. If you are not sure about tires, you can search for several brands of tires indicated for comparison.

What you should be concerned about is the difference of wheels in quality. Therefore, compared to the various brands on the Internet, you can get very little information about the level of the foundry factory, management level and other related information. Then please try to find a brand or factory with sufficient strength. For example, our JWHEEL is a wheel hub production factory with more than 30 years of experience. After 30 years of continuous development, JWHEEL’s wheels combine traditional casting with modern flow form and forging, and have various types of trendy designs. The wheels designed and manufactured by JWHEEL are installed on AUDI SUVs,which are more complementary, and further enhancing their sense of luxury, dynamism and maturity.

Secondly, regarding the wheel hub, because the aluminum alloy wheel hub is lighter in weight and stronger than the steel wheel hub under the same specifications, it is easier to make various shapes. So I prefer to talk about a few points from the perspective of aluminum alloy wheels combined with the doubts of the subject, as follows:

1. Manufacturing method

The main manufacturing methods of aluminum wheels are forging and casting. The difference between these two methods can be simply understood as: casting is to heat the aluminum ingot into a liquid state, inject it into the mold and then cool it to form; forging is to place it on a flat mold at room temperature or after heating to soften (without morphological change), and then place it on a flat mold. A 8,000-10,000-ton press is used to extrude and deform aluminum into rims.

Since the shape of the aluminum material has changed in the casting method, and it needs to enter the closed mold, it is inevitable that impurities and air will infiltrate.

During the forging process, the aluminum material has no shape change, so the infiltration of air and impurities is avoided. At the same time, due to the high pressure of the forging press, the molecular density of the forged wheel hub is higher and the structure is tighter. Lighter and stronger, which means less fuel.

At the same time, the price of a gravity casting machine on the market is around 3,000-4,500 USD, and the low-pressure casting machine is around 15,000-30,000 USD. Compared with the same period of last year, the Japanese forging machine is about 3 million USD, and the German machine is about 7.5 million USD.

The above costs determine the natural huge difference in price between forged and cast wheels. Of course, car owners who pursue performance should not care about spending about high cost to buy four forged wheels. No other reason, just to reduce weight and enhance performance!

2. Precautions

Purchasing: Due to the difference in manufacturing costs, some of the bargains on the Internet must be casting production, and must be the most common gravity casting production at present, so it is obvious that the mold accuracy and production level are not comparable to the quality of the original wheel hub supplier. What's more, it is understood that the product quality of some brand agents on the Internet is extremely high. Even a so-called forging brand claims to have a forging press level of 8,000 tons and high standard production, but in fact it hasn’t reached this level. The foundry and address are also well known, and they cannot achieve a truly high level of forging hubs.

3. Other

Please note that the rim upgrade is not the bigger the better, and the weight of the rim should be one of the important dimensions when choosing the shape. if it's just for looks, upgrading the large-sized wheels increases the weight at the same time, which will inevitably lead to an increase in fuel consumption when the weight of the whole vehicle is increased.

If you upgrades from 17-inch original wheel hub to 19-inch wheel hub, pay attention not to be too heavy when purchasing.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of big wheels and small wheels.

A: Generally speaking, although the size of the wheel hub will be different in the high and low configuration, the diameter of the wheel is the same. In other words, although the high-profile wheels are large, the tires are correspondingly thinner. therefore:

Advantages of big wheels:

(1)  Good-looking.

(2) The rigidity of the sidewall is stronger, and the cornering maneuverability will be improved to a certain extent. Thinner tires generally have higher sidewall rigidity. When the vehicle is cornering, the tire will be deformed to one side by lateral force. At this time, the high rigidity of the sidewall will restrain this deformation to a certain extent, so that the tire maintains a greater ground contact area for better grip.

(3)  Can accommodate a larger size brake system. The inner ring of the big wheel hub has more space, and can be equipped with a larger size brake disc and multi-piston caliper, which can effectively improve the braking performance.

Shortcoming:

(1)  Tires with big wheels are more expensive. In the same size tire, the flat is thinner than the lower one, and it is generally more expensive.

(2)  Tires with large hubs are more likely to bulge. Thinner tires are less able to absorb shocks, so they are more prone to damage and bulge in the face of large shocks.

(3)  The comfort of the big wheel is worse. Thinner tires are less able to isolate noise and vibration from the road surface, resulting in increased road noise and bumps, and poorer comfort.

(4)  Big wheels are heavier. Under the premise that the material and process remain unchanged, the total weight of the large wheel hub + thin tire will be larger than that of the small wheel hub + thick tire, which will have a certain negative impact on the flexibility of control.

(5)  The manufacturing cost of the large hub itself is higher. When the hub is damaged, the repair or replacement cost of the large hub will be higher.

Summarize:

Generally it is the main point to choose the configuration instead of the wheel hub, so you can only use relevant wheel hub. Unless wheel and tire size can be selected separately. In general, for comfort-oriented vehicle models, small-sized wheels are more suitable; for sports-oriented models, large-sized wheels are more suitable.

Since you can drive an AUDI SUV, I believe that funding is not a big problem. What you should be concerned about is the difference of wheels in quality.
