Advantages and Disadvantages of Having Bigger Wheels | JWHEEL

Generally speaking, although the size of the wheel hub will be different in the high and low configuration, the diameter of the wheel is the same. In other words, although the high-profile wheels are large, the tires are correspondingly thinner. Big wheels are more beautiful and stronger and can accommodate a larger size brake system. For comfort-oriented models, small-sized wheels are more suitable; for sports-oriented models, large-sized wheels are more suitable.

Generally speaking, although the size of the wheel hub will be different in the high and low configuration, the diameter of the wheel is the same. In other words, although the high-profile wheels are large, the tires are correspondingly thinner. therefore:

Advantages of big wheels:

(1) Good-looking.

(2) The rigidity of the sidewall is stronger, and the cornering maneuverability will be improved to a certain extent. Thinner tires generally have higher sidewall rigidity. When the vehicle is cornering, the tire will be deformed to one side by lateral force. At this time, the high rigidity of the sidewall will restrain this deformation to a certain extent, so that the tire maintains a greater ground contact area for better grip.

(3) Can accommodate a larger size brake system. The inner ring of the big wheel hub has more space, and can be equipped with a larger size brake disc and multi-piston caliper, which can effectively improve the braking performance.

Disadvantages of big wheels:

(1) Tires with big wheels are more expensive. In the same size tire, the flat is thinner than the lower one, and it is generally more expensive.

(2) Tires with large hubs are more likely to bulge. Thinner tires are less able to absorb shocks, so they are more prone to damage and bulge in the face of large shocks.

(3) The comfort of the big wheel is worse. Thinner tires are less able to isolate noise and vibration from the road surface, resulting in increased road noise and bumps, and poorer comfort.

(4) Big wheels are heavier. Under the premise that the material and process remain unchanged, the total weight of the large wheel hub + thin tire will be larger than that of the small wheel hub + thick tire, which will have a certain negative impact on the flexibility of control.

(5) The manufacturing cost of the large hub itself is higher. When the hub is damaged, the repair or replacement cost of the large hub will be higher.

How to choose: generally choose the configuration instead of the hub, so you can only use what kind of hub. Unless wheel and tire size can be selected separately. In general, for comfort-oriented models, small-sized wheels are more suitable; for sports-oriented models, large-sized wheels are more suitable.
