The suspension system of R129 consists of two parts, one at the front has double crossing arms and the the other on the back is five-link. And it uses fiber optical communication system instead of previous electronic signal communication system. Moreover, VSC system, ABS, ASS and front air bag are also optional when choosing vehicle type or equipment.

    As for the engine, there are two available choices: one is 3.0-liter DOHC V6 with 24 valves, which is able to produce the maximum of 228housepower, and the corresponding vehicle type is 300SL; the other is 5.0-liter DOHC V8 with 32 valves, which is able to produce even higher power ----- 322housepower, and the corresponding vehicle type is 500SL. Both the two engines, made of lightweight material ---- full aluminum, together with 5AT or 5MT, are able to produce massive power. Because of the design of three-valve dual ignition, the fuel consumption of this type of engine is 11% lower than that of the previous six-cylinder or eight-cylinder engine. Meanwhile, the emissions of V6 engine and V8 engine are both low enough to reach the future standards of emission. Even though the weight of the vehicle body exceeds 2 tons, SL can still be fast as flash with the motivation of strong driving power. In 1992, benz put out 600SL, which has 6.0-liter DOHC V12 engine and 4AT, producing the maximum of 389housepower.

    In 1994, the emission of six-cylinder engine increased to 3.2 liter, while the max wattage was lowered to 217housepower, and the vehicle type was 320SL. At the same time, Benz changed the naming way of vehicle types by putting the letters before the numbers, and the previous type names are also changed to SL320,SL500 and SL600
